Luxury Home Renovation, Addition & Custom Home Construction in Walnut Creek, CA
Scott O’Hara Construction | Serving Walnut Creek and Central Contra Costa County
Walnut Creek: A City That Takes Quality Seriously
Walnut Creek sits at the center of Contra Costa County — easy freeway access, BART connectivity, a thriving downtown, and established residential neighborhoods that range from post-war mid-century homes in the flats to larger hillside properties with views and acreage. It’s a city that attracts homeowners who value quality of life and are willing to invest in it.
For homeowners in Walnut Creek’s established neighborhoods, a major renovation is an opportunity to do more than update the finishes. It’s an opportunity to fundamentally transform how the home performs — how it feels to live in every day, how healthy the air is, how quiet and comfortable it is in every season, and how resilient it is to the grid failures and fire conditions that are increasingly part of life in the East Bay.
That’s the renovation Scott O’Hara Construction delivers.

What High-Performance Luxury Looks Like in Practice
Most homeowners planning a major renovation think about what their home will look like when it’s done. That’s the right instinct — finishes matter, and we take them seriously. But the homes that feel truly luxurious to live in every single day are the ones where the experience goes beyond what you can see.
A high-performance home isn’t just beautiful. It’s quiet. It’s comfortable in every room at every hour. The air feels clean and fresh the moment you walk in. You don’t notice the temperature because there’s nothing to notice — it’s simply right, everywhere. You don’t hear the HVAC. Doors don’t slam shut when the system kicks on. There are no cold spots near windows in winter or hot zones on the sunny side of the house in summer.
Think about what makes a great luxury hotel feel different the moment you walk in. It isn’t just the finishes. The best luxury hotels engineer fresh air ventilation systems specifically to introduce fresh outdoor air while exhausting stale indoor air — because the best smell is simply clean air. That quality of air — fresh, filtered, constantly renewed — is what makes a great hotel room feel immediately different from everywhere else.
That’s what an ERV does in your home. Continuously. Every day you live there.
Here’s what that looks like in practice on a Walnut Creek home:

The envelope comes first
A tight, well-insulated building envelope — walls, roof, floors, windows, and all the sealing between them — is the foundation of everything else. When the envelope is done correctly, heat doesn’t bleed out in winter, radiant heat from windows doesn’t create hot zones in summer, and the conditioned air your HVAC produces stays where you put it. The result is thermal stability — the same comfortable temperature in every room, at every hour.
The HVAC is engineered, not guessed
Every system we install is sized using Manual J load calculations and Manual D duct design — not the industry rule of thumb that reliably produces oversized, noisy, inefficient equipment. A right-sized system runs longer cycles at lower output, dehumidifies properly, delivers even temperatures throughout, and does it quietly. No blasting air across rooms. No doors slamming shut when the system kicks on. No hot spots or cold corners. You won’t notice it’s running.
Indoor air quality is actively managed
Fresh air ventilation through an engineered ERV system runs continuously — exchanging stale interior air for filtered fresh outdoor air without losing heating or cooling energy. And throughout construction, we carefully monitor and control the VOCs and other air quality factors introduced into the home so the indoor environment is genuinely healthy from day one.
Proof from Neighboring Markets
Our most comprehensive recent projects are in the Lamorinda area — close enough in market character and homeowner profile to Walnut Creek that the work speaks directly to what we bring to this market.

35 Donald Drive, Orinda
A whole-home renovation and 600 square foot addition for a client who is a licensed architect, former City of Oakland building inspector, and expert witness in construction defect litigation. He knows what good work looks like. The project included right-sized HVAC at 3 tons instead of 6, zero-leakage ductwork, engineered ERV ventilation, a sealed and conditioned crawlspace, rigid foam above the roof deck, a standing seam metal roof, and a pool-fed off-grid fire suppression system that operates independently of municipal water and PG&E. This fire suppression system and our approach to air sealing were presented at the 2026 Forum on Measured Home Performance — a forum that also featured researchers from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Old Millstone Lane, Lafayette
Currently under construction. A 440 square foot addition to the main house, near-complete renovation of the existing 2,000 square feet, and full renovation and 295 square foot addition to the ADU. The home tested at 3.0 ACH50 at the framing stage with the garage open — and is projected to land under 1.5 ACH50 at completion. The project broke ground January 28th and is scheduled for completion in early December — under 11 months for a project of this scope and complexity.

Why Walnut Creek Homeowners Choose Scott O’Hara Construction
We know the Walnut Creek building codes, and what Walnut Creek homeowners prioritize when building or renovating a home:
We know the Walnut Creek permit process
And we know how to work through it. Walnut Creek has a reputation for one of the more challenging permit processes in Contra Costa County. We have recent firsthand experience navigating both residential and commercial permits in the city and know what to expect. For homeowners planning a significant renovation, having a contractor who understands the process upfront — and builds that reality into the schedule and budget from day one — makes a meaningful difference in how smoothly a project runs.
We engineer the mechanical systems
Every HVAC and ventilation system we install is sized using Manual J load calculations and Manual D duct design. The result is a system that performs correctly, runs quietly, and delivers even comfort in every room — without the noise, hot spots, and inefficiency of an oversized system.
We build for the long term
Walnut Creek homeowners investing at this level deserve a home that performs as well in fifteen years as it does on move-in day. That means getting the envelope right, the systems right, and the finishes right — and not cutting corners on any of them.
Performance & luxury move at the same speed
Detailed scheduling in Buildertrend, proactive communication with all stakeholders, and disciplined job site coordination are how complex projects stay on track without sacrificing quality. A well-managed project is a fast project — and a fast project doesn’t mean a rushed one.
You won’t notice the HVAC
No oversized systems blasting conditioned air across rooms. No noisy returns. No doors slamming shut when the system kicks on. No hot spots or cold corners. Just quiet, even comfort — the kind you stop noticing because there’s nothing to notice.
The Performance = Luxury Difference
In Walnut Creek, the homes that hold their value, attract the most discerning buyers, and deliver the best daily living experience are the ones that perform. Tight envelopes. Right-sized mechanical systems. Continuous fresh air. Consistent temperature throughout. Materials selected as carefully for what they put into the air as for how they look.
That’s not a technical specification. That’s what luxury feels like from the inside.
